Carpet makers answer this one for you. Shaw says to schedule professional hot water extraction every 6 to 18 months, depending on traffic, and Mohawk's warranty guide requires at least one professional cleaning every 18 months. Busy homes in Fort Lauderdale sit at the short end of that.
What do carpet makers say about professional cleaning?
Shaw's carpet care page says to "Schedule a professional hot water extraction (steam cleaning) anywhere from 6-18 months, depending on traffic."
Mohawk is stricter, because it puts the schedule inside the warranty. Its carpet warranty guide (the Green Living by Mohawk guide sold through Lowe's) says: "A minimum of one professional cleaning every 18 months is required using cleaning products, equipment or systems that carry the Carpet & Rug Institute Seal of Approval." The same guide recommends professional hot water extraction every 12 to 18 months.
Your own carpet may carry a different booklet, so read the one that came with it. If it asks for proof of cleaning, keep every invoice.
Does South Florida's weather change the answer?
It changes where you land inside that range. Fort Lauderdale has a tropical rainforest climate (Köppen Af), and its wet season runs from May through October, when the weather is typically hot, humid and wet. The city averages 60.95 inches of rain a year, most of it in those months.
Six months of wet shoes and beach sand coming through the door all counts as traffic, which is what both makers go by. A quiet house with nobody in and out can probably go the full 18 months, but add a dog and a door onto the pool and you'll want it done sooner.

Pets are the big one, since accidents and fur end up wherever they lie and walk. Young kids too, they live at floor level. Also rentals that turn over between guests, and any room where the carpet meets a patio door or the pool deck.

Blot spills instead of rubbing them, and test any cleaner on a hidden corner first. If you do put a product on a spot, tell the technician which one when you book, because it changes how that spot is treated.
