Microfiber, Velvet and Water Rings: Couch Cleaning Questions in Fort Lauderdale

The tag under the cushion carries a cleaning code, and it says whether water can go on the fabric at all. Pro Steamers Florida cleans sofas, sectionals, loveseats and dining chairs, and the technician chooses the method after seeing the fabric.

What does the code on my couch tag mean?

Many furniture makers put a letter code on the fabric, often on a label under the seat cushions. Utah State University Extension spells the letters out: "W means that the upholstery should be cleaned only with water-based cleaning agents or foam." S means water-free dry-cleaning solvents only. W-S (also written WS or W/S) allows either, and X means vacuuming or light brushing and nothing more.

Designtex, an upholstery fabric maker, is blunter about S: "Do not saturate. Do not use water." Take a phone photo of the tag before you call (954) 466-1462.

Which code does a microfiber sectional have?

It varies, which is the reason to look. American Furniture Warehouse, a furniture retailer, says microfiber "has a cleaning code of W." This Old House says "Most (not all) microfiber furniture cannot be washed with water, as this could lead to staining."

Read the tag on yours. If it's missing or worn away, say so when you call, and the technician checks the fabric before choosing a method. Sectionals are part of our upholstery cleaning, along with sofas, loveseats and dining chairs.

Why did water leave a ring on my couch?

On fabric meant for solvent only, the water itself can leave the mark. American Furniture Warehouse says of code S: "Using water or detergent-based solutions on the fabric can cause discoloring or water spots." Soaking a spot makes it worse. Virginia Cooperative Extension's upholstery guide says "Never saturate the fabric with water or a detergent solution," and adds that drying fast with a fan or a hair dryer set at cool helps prevent ring formation.

For a ring that's already there, the same guide says to moisten the entire stained area with white vinegar, let it stand a few minutes, then sponge the area with water. It was written in 1985, so check the code first and test on a hidden part of the fabric. If the ring stays, call us and say what you tried.

How do you clean velvet dining chairs?

The fabric's own instructions come first. Velvet is a pile fabric, and Luum Textiles, which makes velvets, says "Marking or bruising of the pile after sitting or handling is normal." Mayer Fabrics' velvet guide says to brush gently in the direction of the pile where pressure marks show, and not to let excessive water reach velvets marked dry clean only.

Velvets differ from one style to the next. Luum notes that some are bleach cleanable and tells owners to check the specifications for the style. Count the chairs, have a photo of one tag ready when you call, and the technician picks the method once the fabric has been seen.

Should I rent a machine or hire someone?

For carpet, the industry standard answers it. CRI 205 says rental and home machines "are effective at cleaning spots and spills, and provide interim cleaning," and that "they should not be substituted for periodic deep cleaning by a carpet cleaning professional." Shaw's care page says professional equipment "has more extraction power than the rental units available to individuals," and warns that soap residue left on carpet can cause rapid re-soiling.

A couch adds the tag. A rental extractor works with water and cleaning solution, and on an S or X code the fabric maker's instructions rule water out, so read the code before renting anything.

Can I get the sofa and a mattress cleaned together?
